What you should look out for when buying a travel awning?

It all depends on the material

You want an awning that can withstand heavy rain and strong sunlight? Then you have to make sure that the material is weather- and tearproof. When it comes to that, you can hardly go wrong with double-coated polyester. It also protects you from UV rays, for example.

Of course, your helper should also be protected against moisture and bacteria. Optimal protection is provided by ventilation openings on the gable – condensation doesn’t stand a chance. Pretty clever, isn’t it?

Light as a feather or extra robust – there are poles suitable for everyone

Do you want a lightweight awning? Then we recommend getting one with aluminium poles. They can be easily transported from A to B.

If you want more stability, robust steel poles are an absolute must. They can withstand a lot.

Are you into stability and convenience? Then inflatable awnings are ideal for you. You can inflate the air chambers in no time at all with an air pump to create a stable living room in front of your caravan.

Extra protection thanks to distance to the ground – the mud flap

Every travel awning is equipped with a mud flap. But the distance from the lower edge of the fabric to the ground varies from caravan to caravan and often depends on the ground conditions. To protect you from moisture and crawling insects, the mud flap should be at least high enough that you can easily tension the guy ropes. The rest then lies on the ground and serves as a base for the groundsheet or carpet. That way, nothing stands in the way of a relaxed holiday.

Technical terms simply explained

  • What is a piping rail?
You can use a piping rail to attach your awning to your vehicle, for example. Are you wondering what a piping is? For the awning fabric to be attached to the vehicle, there needs to be a connection between the rail and the fabric. This connection is the piping. It reinforces the edge of the awning fabric. The piping is round and runs out flat towards the fabric. This means that the piping can be easily pulled into the piping rail on the vehicle.
  • What are ventilation openings?
Ventilation openings keep condensation to a minimum. They are usually located at the back or sides of tunnel tents and are kept closed with Velcro. To ventilate the tent, you can simply open them manually.
  • What is a panorama window?
A panorama window is a particularly large window. If you have one of these windows, you will have plenty of daylight in your tent and can enjoy a great view at the same time.
  • What is polyester?
Polyester is an easy-to-clean synthetic fibre material. It is robust, light and weatherproof and is therefore often used for tents.
  • What are pegs?
Pegs are elongated, pointy anchoring pins that are, for example, used to fasten a tent to the ground. Pegs are available in various designs and materials.
