Camping when it is cold outside: important tips for motorhomes, caravans and tents
1. Equipment
A good heating system in your motorhome or caravan is essential to keep you warm. In addition, thermal mats and insulating mats ensure that the heat stays inside. For additional comfort, you can use blankets and electric blankets to make the cold nights more pleasant.
Special frost protection systems and integrated heating systems are required to protect water pipes and RV batteries from freezing. These ensure that your vehicle remains functional even at sub-zero temperatures.
3. Awnings
A well-insulated awning offers additional space and protection from the cold. This area can also be heated with a fan heater to create a more comfortable atmosphere.
Grey water can freeze quickly in winter. A frost protection system for the grey water tank or heatable collection containers help to avoid this problem and protect the environment.
5. Winter tyres and snow chains
Make sure that your motorhome or caravan is equipped with winter tyres. In many regions, snow chains are also mandatory in snowy conditions to ensure that you arrive safely.
In winter, more energy is needed for heating. Make sure you have enough gas cylinders or a reliable power supply.
High-quality sleeping mats and sleeping bags are essential when camping in a tent in winter. As heaters are hardly practical in tents, you should use the layering principle to keep warm.
8. Safety
Install a CO detector if you use gas heating and ventilate regularly to avoid condensation and mould.
